In 2011 the Indianapolis Adult Baseball League started a scholarship for Indianapolis area high school baseball players The schools that provided baseball diamonds for the IABL competition and were eligible to nominate players for the award. I had been involved with the IABL since the mid-90's so I was excited to nominate one of our Lutheran players.
The winner of the first Sportsmanship Award from IABL was Lutheran Baseball player:
Taylor Goff
Taylor played baseball all for years and was our starting catcher for 3 of the seasons. He also played football and basketball. Taylor found his niche by producing videos that the school used for LuFest and other events and activities. Part of my nomination letter was:
"Taylor is an outstanding young man who has represented our baseball program extremely well for four years. He is a talented player but I believe his greatest attributes are his attitude and enthusiasm for the game overall. He is most often the first player on the diamond and the last to leave. In addition to playing, Taylor is always doing the little things to help out like carrying equipment, getting screens, working on the diamond or whatever needs to be done, typically without being asked."
After graduating from Lutheran High School, Taylor went to Butler University. I remember going to a dinner the IABL had a year later and I announced that Taylor had been selected as the Outstanding Freshman at Butler for 2012. One coach said he did not remember Taylor being in the Butler line-up. I was proud to say "No, Taylor was the outstanding freshman for the entire school, not just baseball!"
