Second base is a challenging position to play. Lutheran Baseball was fortunate to have some very good players at this important position over the years. A second baseman has to cover a lot of ground to their left and right on the diamond. In addition to fielding a groundball, these players need to:
be able to catch pop ups into short right field and foul territory
get to 2B to turn a double play from 3B, SS or the pitcher
hold runners on who may want to attempt a steal of 3rd base
get to the base on pick-off attempts
be at the base for attempted steals
get out to right field to be cutoff men and relay throwers
cover 1B on bunt attempts
back up throws from the catcher to the pitcher when a runner(s) is/are on base
participate in rundowns
