It takes a special player to be a very good third baseman. Often the ball is hit sharply to third and the player has to have quick actions and instincts to make the plays. A third baseman needs to have a strong and accurate throwing arm as he is at times making the longest throws in the infield. Among the other actions of third baseman are:
charging bunts and making throws to the correct base
serving as a cut-off man for throws from leftfield
catching fair and foul pop ups and dealing with dugouts and fences
using his body to block and knock down hard hit balls and keeping the ball in front to be able to make a throw
fielding a groundball and making an accurate throw to second base to turn a double play
cut off groundballs that are softly hit toward shortstop and make a good throw
Lutheran Baseball has had its share of very good players at third base.
